Russia Intensifies Attacks on Ukrainian Cities, Targeting Energy Infrastructure

DEFENSE

In early January 2026, Russia escalated military operations against Ukraine, launching over 200 drones at Kyiv and 20 Iskander M missiles targeting various cities, including Odesa and Kharkiv. The attacks have left major urban areas without power and heating, severely impacting civilian life and military operations.

Ukrainian air defenses struggled to respond effectively, leading to widespread electricity outages. As of January 13, 1.5% of residential buildings in Ukraine lacked heating, primarily in Kyiv, where 472 buildings were affected.

Russia also targeted critical infrastructure, and the situation remains dire as Ukraine's military capabilities are further strained. The ongoing strikes on energy resources are aimed at crippling Ukraine's operational capacity and logistics.
