Russia Offers Support for Indonesia's Nuclear Power Development by 2032

FUSION & ADVANCED NUCLEAR POWER

Russia has expressed willingness to assist Indonesia in developing its first nuclear power plant by 2032 to reduce fossil fuel dependence. During President Prabowo Subianto's recent visit to Moscow, President Vladimir Putin discussed opportunities for nuclear energy cooperation.

Russian Ambassador Sergei Tolchenov emphasized that nuclear energy could enhance bilateral ties, despite safety concerns stemming from past disasters like Fukushima. He highlighted small modular reactors and floating power stations as viable solutions for Indonesia's diverse geography.

Russia operates the world's first floating nuclear power station, the Akademik Lomonosov, and has proposed projects to the Indonesian government. Meanwhile, Indonesia is advancing its nuclear ambitions with a US-backed feasibility study involving a small modular reactor in West Kalimantan, in partnership with firms including NuScale, Fluor, and JGC.
