Russian-Flagged LNG Tankers Indicate Expansion of Dark Fleet
Four LNG tankers have re-flagged to Russia and are heading towards Arctic waters, signaling an increase in exports from sanctioned projects. This movement reflects Moscow's strategy to navigate around US sanctions and enhance its natural gas exports.

Four liquefied natural gas tankers—Kosmos, Luch, Orion, and Merkuriy—have changed flags to Russia and are navigating towards the Arctic, with tracking data indicating a route to Murmansk. This port is associated with the Arctic LNG 2 project, which is subject to US sanctions.
The vessels were reflagged in March and April after ownership transfers from Oman Ship Management Co. to companies like Mighty Ocean Shipping Ltd. and Celtic Maritime & Trading SA. The presence of these older tankers as shadow fleet vessels suggests attempts to circumvent sanctions. This expansion could impact global LNG supply dynamics.
