Russia's Perun Laser System Faces Weather and Power Challenges

Russia's Perun laser system is engineered to target unmanned aerial vehicles and can engage threats at distances of five kilometers. However, the system's effectiveness is severely limited by weather conditions, as atmospheric factors can disperse the laser beam, diminishing its impact.
Expert Mikhail Timoshenko highlighted that optimal performance is achievable only in clear conditions, with significant scattering issues arising from fog and moisture. Additionally, the Perun system requires substantial electrical power to maintain operational efficiency, representing another critical challenge in directed-energy weapon development. Trials revealed the system can emit a continuous beam for 15 minutes, but sustained combat readiness is constrained to five hours.
