Rwanda and Russia Partner on Civil Nuclear Development
Rwanda has signed an agreement with Russia to develop civil nuclear capabilities through microreactors. This initiative aims to diversify Rwanda's energy sources and reduce reliance on fossil fuels amid global energy challenges.

Rwanda has finalized a partnership with Russia to enhance its civil nuclear energy capabilities, focusing on modular small reactors under 300 megawatts. The deal was established during the International Diplomatic Forum in Antalya, Turkey, between Rwandan Foreign Minister Olivier Nduhungirehe and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
The initiative is part of a broader strategy to produce approximately 110 megawatts in the next decade, aligning with Rwanda's Vision 2050 objectives. The nuclear energy program includes the establishment of a Nuclear Science and Technology Center, supported by Russia, to facilitate research and production of radioisotopes for various sectors. Experts caution that without adequate funding, the ambitious nuclear plans may face significant operational challenges.
