Rwanda Receives 33 Former DRC Fighters for Reintegration Program

DEFENSE

Rwanda welcomed 33 former fighters from armed groups in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) between January 20 and 23, 2026. The Rwandan Demobilisation and Reintegration Commission reported the repatriation of members from the FDLR, Nyatura, and Wazalendo groups.

These individuals will participate in the Pre-Discharge Orientation Programme (PDOP) at the Mutobo Demobilization and Reintegration Centre, which aims to rehabilitate and reintegrate them into society. The PDOP includes civic education, Rwandan history, unity, reconciliation, and vocational training over a three-month period.

Since its inception in 2001, the program has supported over 12,000 former combatants in their transition to civilian life. The centre is monitored by international diplomats and defense attachés to assess rehabilitation progress.
