RWTH Aachen and Airbus Develop Lightweight Fuel Cell System for Short-Haul Aircraft
FUEL CELL
RWTH Aachen and Airbus are developing a lightweight low-temperature PEM fuel cell system for short-haul aircraft, funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy through the Climate and Transformation Fund. The project, aimed at aircraft with about 100 seats, involves partners such as Aerostack, TLK-Thermo, the German Aerospace Center (DLR), and the Technical University of Braunschweig.
The research will encompass the entire drive train, addressing the challenges of dynamic and safety-critical operations in aviation. This project follows RWTH Aachen's previous aviation initiative, Lime, which focuses on hybrid-electric solutions.
