Sabah Energy Corporation Sdn Bhd and Petroliam Nasional Berhad have signed a Heads of Agreement to develop the Mutiara Cluster offshore Sandakan, which aims to strengthen energy security for Sabah's East Coast. The agreement, witnessed by key officials, will lead to a future Gas Sales Agreement, targeting first gas delivery by early 2029.

Currently, SEC supplies natural gas that powers 86% of Sabah's electricity, primarily in the West Coast, while the East Coast relies on small-scale LNG deliveries. The Mutiara Cluster will enhance gas supply reliability, support industrial growth in Sandakan, and contribute to the Sabah Maju Jaya 2.0 agenda for sustained investment and economic growth.
