Saft to Supply Lithium-Ion Batteries for Dutch Orka-Class Submarines
Saft has secured a contract with Naval Group for lithium-ion battery systems intended for the Royal Netherlands Navy's Orka-class submarines. This partnership enhances the operational capabilities of the submarines, allowing longer underwater endurance and improved stealth during missions.

Saft will develop, manufacture, and supply lithium-ion battery systems for the Netherlands' four Orka-class submarines, enhancing operational performance and stealth. These submarines aim to replace the older Walrus-class boats and are designed to support various military missions, including surveillance and joint operations.
The financial terms and delivery timeline of the contract remain undisclosed. The first two submarines are expected to be delivered within ten years of the September 2024 agreement with the Netherlands Ministry of Defence.
The partnership between Saft and Naval Group highlights the importance of advanced battery technology in modern naval defense, responding to the demand for enhanced energy density and reliability. This contract signifies a step towards reinforcing European defense capabilities.
