Sanpete County Planning Commission Considers Regulations on Data Centers and Solar Farms
Sanpete County is initiating discussions to develop ordinances governing data centers and solar farms, addressing local regulatory gaps. This move comes amid a national trend of expanding data center infrastructure, particularly in rural areas, highlighting the need for local guidelines to manage potential impacts on communities.

The Sanpete County Planning Commission is exploring the establishment of regulations for data centers and solar farms, prompted by the absence of current ordinances. Vice Chair Claudia Jarrett emphasized the need for guidelines to protect residents and manage future developments.
In contrast, Box Elder County has approved the Stratos Project, a large data center initiative backed by Kevin O'Leary, raising concerns about environmental impacts. A Pew Research Center report indicates that over 1,500 data center projects are in planning stages, with a significant shift towards rural locations.
Additionally, legislative efforts in Maine to limit large data centers were vetoed, allowing for continued development. Governor Spencer Cox supports data center growth in Utah, citing economic and national security benefits.
