Santam Warns of Increased Lightning Claims for Solar Power Systems in South Africa
Santam, a leading South African insurer, has reported a notable increase in lightning damage claims related to solar power systems, linked to a surge in installations and more severe thunderstorms. The company highlights that claims growth for these systems is outpacing policy growth, prompting insurers to require compliance with electrical standards and the installation of protective devices. Solar system owners are advised to secure adequate insurance and notify their body corporate if part of a sectional title scheme.

Santam, one of South Africa's largest insurers, reports a significant rise in claims for lightning damage on solar power systems. By the end of 2025, approximately 7,500MW of behind-the-meter solar power was installed in the country, an increase of 1,300MW from the previous year.
This surge is attributed to both the growing number of systems and the increasing severity of thunderstorms driven by rising temperatures. Santam indicated that claims growth is disproportionate relative to policy growth, particularly for solar power systems.
Insurers are now requiring systems to have a valid electrical certificate of compliance, adherence to SANS standards, and may mandate surge protection devices and lightning arrestors for coverage. Owners are advised to ensure adequate insurance against theft and damage, including the installation of specialized fire extinguishers for lithium-ion batteries. Those in sectional title schemes must notify their body corporate regarding their solar installations.
