Sarawak Gains Regulatory Control Over Bintulu Port; Plans for Sustainable Development Initiatives
The Sarawak government has assumed regulatory authority over Bintulu Port, marking a key milestone in the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63). This transition not only enhances Sarawak's management of its strategic assets but also positions Bintulu Port as a pivotal center for logistics and green energy in the Asia-Pacific region.

The Sarawak government has taken over the regulatory authority of Bintulu Port, solidifying a significant aspect of the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63). The Bintulu Port Authority (Amendment) Bill 2024 and the Federal Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2024 were passed on July 15, 2024, facilitating this shift.
This initiative aligns with Malaysia's ambition of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 through sustainable operations. Additionally, insights from Austria's Freudenau Hydropower Plant will inform Sarawak's Limbang-Lawas Local Plan 2035, promoting integrated urban and energy planning. The emphasis on clean energy and climate resilience is expected to attract international investment and enhance regional development.
