Schaeffler AG, under CEO Klaus Rosenfeld, is shifting towards the defense sector, marking a strategic pivot from its automotive roots. The company has partnered with drone startup Helsing as part of this transition, aiming for significant growth in military revenues, currently at approximately 100 million euros, with aspirations to reach 1 billion euros in five years.
The automotive sector has faced challenges, leading to a reduction of 4,700 jobs announced in November 2023. Despite this, Rosenfeld emphasizes that the shift towards defense is strategically motivated rather than a reaction to necessity.
Schaeffler also sees potential in humanoid robotics as a substantial market. The company's goal is to become one of the top three automotive suppliers globally, despite the challenges ahead. The partnership with Helsing is expected to enhance Germany's defense capabilities amid ongoing scrutiny over ethical implications in the defense industry.
