Science World Completes $39 Million Retrofit with Solar Installations
Science World has installed three solar arrays on its lower rooftop, part of a $39 million retrofit to enhance energy efficiency. The project is expected to cut energy use by over 40% and greenhouse gas emissions by 75% while serving as a pilot for vertical solar technology in British Columbia.

Science World has finalized the installation of vertical solar panels as part of a $39 million renovation project aimed at improving the facility's energy efficiency. In collaboration with BC Hydro, the project includes 76 vertical panels and 298 solar photovoltaic panels, with electricity generation anticipated to commence before summer 2026.
Funding includes $20 million from the provincial government and $19 million from the federal government across two years. Upgrades also involve new air-source heat pumps and electric chillers. These enhancements are projected to significantly decrease energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. The facility will serve as a focal point during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, hosting the Soccer & Technology exhibit and acting as a gathering site for fans.
