Scottish Government Cuts Funding for Wave Energy Scotland, Threatening Future of Wave Energy Projects
The Scottish Government has cut all funding for Wave Energy Scotland (WES), which will exhaust its financial resources by March 2026. WES, established in 2014 to develop wave energy technology, warned that the decision disrupts its contractual commitments and threatens its viability.
This funding termination jeopardizes Scotland's participation in the EuropeWave programme, a multi-national initiative to deploy prototype wave energy devices. The cut may lead to the loss of WES's ten full-time staff and damage Scotland's reputation with European partners. WES had estimated that commercializing wave and tidal technologies could contribute £8 billion to the economy and support 15,000 jobs by mid-century.
