Scottish Water Plans 8.7% Bill Increase in 2026; Additional Flights for Up Helly Aa Announced

DEFENSE

Scottish Water will increase water charges by 8.7% in 2026/27, raising the average bill by £42 annually. This charge, included in council tax, funds essential services and upgrades. The utility previously kept increases below inflation during the pandemic, leading to an estimated £400-500 million reduction in its investment program.

Scottish Labour deputy leader Jackie Baillie criticized the increase as burdensome for families. In related news, Loganair has added an additional flight from Aberdeen to Sumburgh on January 24 due to high demand for Up Helly Aa, amid ongoing disruption on NorthLink ferry services.

In another development, £1.3 million has been secured for a farmer and crofter-led education program aimed at sustainable food production, credited to Green Highland and Islands MSP Ariane Burgess. Additionally, Shetland Reel has released a limited 'navy strength' edition of its Up Helly Aa gin for its 10th anniversary.
