Sea Shepherd Launches 2026 Operation Antarctica Defense Campaign to Address Krill Crisis
Sea Shepherd Global has initiated its 2026 Operation Antarctica Defense campaign from Ushuaia, Argentina. The campaign aims to raise awareness of the krill crisis, facilitate independent scientific research, and increase economic pressure on the krill industry. Last season marked an early closure of the industrial krill fishery, highlighting pressures on Antarctic ecosystems. The operation will involve documenting krill super trawlers, hosting scientists for data collection, and advocating against krill-derived products.

Sea Shepherd Global launched its 2026 Operation Antarctica Defense campaign from Ushuaia, Argentina, to address the escalating krill crisis in the Antarctic. The previous season saw an early closure of the industrial krill fishery, emphasizing pressures on krill populations and the ecosystem.
The operation will document krill super trawlers in critical whale feeding areas and host scientists for independent research on whale behavior and krill dynamics. Additionally, the campaign aims to promote awareness and discourage the sale of krill oil products. The outcomes will inform the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) regarding fisheries management and marine protected areas.
