Sea Shepherd Global launched its 2026 Operation Antarctica Defense campaign from Ushuaia, Argentina, to address the escalating krill crisis in the Antarctic. The previous season saw an early closure of the industrial krill fishery, emphasizing pressures on krill populations and the ecosystem.

The operation will document krill super trawlers in critical whale feeding areas and host scientists for independent research on whale behavior and krill dynamics. Additionally, the campaign aims to promote awareness and discourage the sale of krill oil products. The outcomes will inform the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) regarding fisheries management and marine protected areas.
