Seaspan Shipyards Contracts Confined Space Robotics for Robotic Blast and Paint Systems
Seaspan Shipyards has contracted Confined Space Robotics for $1.5 million to develop semiautonomous robotic systems for blast and paint operations, enhancing safety and efficiency in shipbuilding. The collaborative robots will utilize advanced tools and software to optimize operations, reduce worker exposure to hazardous materials, and support environmental goals by minimizing waste.

Seaspan Shipyards has awarded a $1.5 million contract to Confined Space Robotics to develop semiautonomous robotic systems for blast and paint operations. The robots will assist in surface preparation and coating processes, particularly for submarines, where safety risks are heightened.
They will be equipped with tools for scaling, laser ablation, grinding, grit-blasting, and spray-coating, mounted on mobile platforms, and guided by custom software. This initiative aims to reduce worker exposure to toxic substances, improve quality and consistency, and lower environmental impact through optimized material usage. This project aligns with Canada's National Shipbuilding Strategy to enhance domestic supply chains and innovation.
