Seoul's Yongsan Children's Garden Opens to Public After Lifting Access Restrictions

DEFENSE

The Yongsan Children's Garden in Seoul, previously a U.S. Army base area, has removed access restrictions and opened to the public without inspections or reservations. This change follows the relocation of South Korean presidential offices back to the Blue House on December 4, 2023.

The park operates from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday to Sunday, with extended hours on Saturdays and closed on Mondays. Daily shuttles are available within the park.

The government plans to initiate a renaming campaign for the park next year. A soil monitoring system has been installed to regularly check air and soil quality. The area, which has been inaccessible to Korean citizens for over 120 years, was occupied by the Japanese military and then the U.S. military, with the phased return of the garrison to South Korea starting in December 2020.
