Sewage Overflow Crisis at North Bay's Treatment Plant Affects Lake Nipissing
Heavy rainfall led to a sewage overflow at North Bay's treatment facility, discharging partially treated sewage into Lake Nipissing. This incident highlights the urgent need for infrastructure improvements to prevent future environmental hazards.

Recent flooding caused by significant rainfall resulted in partially treated sewage entering Lake Nipissing from North Bay's wastewater treatment plant. City councillor Chris Mayne reported that the plant exceeded its capacity sixfold, primarily due to stormwater infiltrating through damaged pipes and connections.
The city initiated a secondary bypass to manage the situation, adhering to Ministry of Environment standards. In February, North Bay received $11,561,375 for wastewater facility improvements aimed at mitigating flooding risks.
The facility, operational since 1960, has previously faced near flooding incidents, notably in 2019 and 2024, threatening service for 17,000 customers. Ongoing structural repairs are critical to prevent further deterioration.
