Shom Adopts Esri's Custom Chart Builder for Automated Nautical Chart Production
Shom, the French Hydrographic and Oceanographic Office, has adopted Esri's Custom Chart Builder for the automated production of paper nautical charts, ensuring compliance with French Navy safety standards while reducing production time and costs. After evaluating various software solutions in 2024, Shom selected CCB for its efficiency in automating chart creation from Electronic Navigational Charts. Esri recognized Shom with a Special Achievement in GIS Award at the 2025 Esri User Conference, with plans to incorporate Shom's custom configurations into future CCB releases.

Esri's Custom Chart Builder (CCB) has been adopted by the Shom (French Hydrographic and Oceanographic Office) for the automated production of paper nautical charts. Following extensive testing, Shom confirmed that CCB-generated charts meet the French Navy's safety standards, significantly reducing production time and costs.
In 2024, Shom evaluated several software solutions before selecting CCB for its capability to automate chart creation from Electronic Navigational Charts (ENCs). The collaboration resulted in a scalable solution that maintains safety and compliance. Esri awarded Shom a Special Achievement in GIS Award at the 2025 Esri User Conference, and plans are in place to integrate Shom's custom configurations into future CCB releases, enhancing charting capabilities for other hydrographic offices.
