SOLAR ENERGY

Shoprite Group has installed its 100th solar photovoltaic system, reaching an installed capacity of over 43,300 kWp, making it one of the largest solar portfolios among South African private companies. These rooftop solar systems can power nearly 12,300 households annually.

In the 2025 financial year, the group sourced 7.2% of its electricity from renewables, up from 6.5% in 2024, consuming 151,243 MWh and reducing carbon emissions by 137,026 tCO₂e. The group has also equipped 1,397 refrigerated trailers with solar panels, saving 3.2 liters of diesel per trailer daily and reducing emissions by an additional 6,000 tCO₂e. Shoprite is exploring wheeling projects, having started to wheel renewable electricity through the City of Cape Town's grid in 2024 and currently supplying electricity to eleven sites, including its Brackenfell office.
