This effort, which generated $465,000 in cost savings for the U.S. government, involved collaboration with the Joint Munitions Command and training from DLA representatives. The project highlights a commitment to proper disposal of radioactive materials and reflects ongoing initiatives within the U.S. Army Tank-automotive and Armaments Command to manage radioactive inventory effectively.

The AJ1-SSA Disposal Branch at Sierra Army Depot processed over 2,000 legacy radiation waste items, recovering 95 kilograms of germanium, a critical material for U.S. defense. This effort involved assistance and training from the Joint Munitions Command and DLA representatives, resulting in an estimated $465,000 savings for the U.S. government.
The depot acquired an X-ray fluorescence analyzer to identify germanium-containing items. Other TACOM sites are also pursuing similar initiatives to manage legacy radiation waste, aiming to reduce radioactive material inventory and liabilities.
