Singapore Launches First Type 218SG Submarine Invincible in Germany
The launch of the Type 218SG submarine Invincible marks a significant advancement in Singapore's naval capabilities, addressing evolving maritime security challenges. This initiative is part of a broader regional trend where defence spending in Asia has surged, necessitating modernized military assets to ensure strategic maritime security.

Singapore's first Type 218SG submarine, Invincible, was launched in Kiel, Germany, on February 18. This submarine is part of a four-boat acquisition plan, with deliveries scheduled from 2021 to 2022, aimed at replacing older submarines in the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN).
The Type 218SG features enhanced endurance, advanced sensors, and an Air Independent Propulsion system, enabling longer submersion capabilities. With a crew of 28, it supports higher operational endurance through a three-watch system.
The submarines are tailored for Singapore's operational environment and will not be sold to other countries, reflecting a strategic move amid regional military expansions, including China and India. The Invincible is expected to undergo sea trials before operational deployment.
