SK On Negotiates Battery Supply for U.S. Defense Firm's AI Underwater Vehicles
SK On Co., a South Korean battery manufacturer, is in discussions with a U.S. defense firm to supply batteries for AI-powered unmanned underwater vehicles. This initiative is part of SK On's strategy to expand into the defense sector, which includes recent outreach to a European defense company regarding battery supply for electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) vehicles.
SK On is currently providing battery cells for an unmanned vehicle project by Hyundai Rotem Co. The company aims to develop high-density ternary nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM) batteries for immediate needs and is exploring solid-state batteries for future applications.
However, mass production is not expected until after 2028 due to lengthy certification processes. SK On is also working on solid-state battery technology at its Daejeon facility, targeting commercialization by 2029 and collaborating with SolidPower to enhance development.
