SK Siltron CSS to Close Michigan Plant, Impacting 140 Jobs Amid EV Market Shifts
SK Siltron will shut down its Bay County semiconductor wafer plant, affecting all 140 employees. The closure is attributed to significant changes in the electric vehicle market, leading to challenges in the silicon carbide business, despite previous investments and support.

SK Siltron CSS will close its Bay County facility in Michigan, impacting 140 employees within 60 days. This decision follows sustained challenges in the silicon carbide wafer market due to shifts in electric vehicle demand.
The plant, which opened in September 2022 with a $300 million investment, aimed to produce semiconductors for electric vehicles. A $544 million federal loan was secured in 2024 for expansion, which was repaid earlier this month.
Local officials expressed concern over the closure, noting its impact on the regional economy. The market's slower than expected growth in EV adoption has been a significant factor in this decision, emphasizing the volatility in the semiconductor sector.
