SNCF and Sun-Ways Identify 38 Million m² in France for Solar Panel Installation Along Railways
A potential area of 38 million square meters has been identified in France for solar panel installation along SNCF railways. The Swiss startup Sun-Ways has initiated a pilot project in Neuchâtel, testing removable photovoltaic panels that can generate 18 kWc from 100 meters of track. SNCF has partnered with Sun-Ways to evaluate the technology until 2028, aiming to utilize its 12 million m² of built space and 100,000 hectares of unused land. This initiative could significantly contribute to local energy production and the transition to renewable energy.

SNCF and Sun-Ways have identified a potential area of 38 million square meters along railways in France for solar energy generation. Sun-Ways initiated a pilot project in April 2025 in Neuchâtel, utilizing 48 removable photovoltaic panels on 100 meters of track to produce around 16,000 kWh annually.
SNCF, a major electricity consumer and landowner, has partnered with Sun-Ways to assess this technology until 2028. The project aims to generate local energy for stations and train operations, potentially transforming railway infrastructure into a significant renewable energy source.
