Sonatrach Upgrades Liquefied Natural Gas Plants in Arzew
Sonatrach is rehabilitating three of its six LNG trains at the GL1Z complex to maintain export capacity. The upgrades, involving SOMIZ Spa and JGC Algeria, are critical as European demand for LNG rises amid reduced Russian supplies.

Sonatrach has completed the rehabilitation of the MCHE for Train 500 at the GL1Z liquefaction complex in Bethioua. Previously, Trains 100 and 300 underwent similar upgrades. The project involves a collaboration between SOMIZ Spa and JGC Algeria, under Sonatrach's authority, with Honeywell providing technology following its acquisition of Air Products' LNG business for $1.81 billion.
The GL1Z facility, operational since 1978, has a nominal capacity of eight million tonnes per annum, currently operating at 70% capacity. This rehabilitation aims to sustain export levels and reduce operational gaps.
The completion of three remaining trains is pending. Sonatrach has increased its reference prices by 1.6% to 7.1% since February 2025, anticipating significant volumes from American and Qatari sources by 2027-2028.
