Sonora Congress Calls for Environmental Review of US Gas Pipelines and LNG Projects

NATURAL GAS

During a session on February 12, members of the Sonora Congress requested a comprehensive review of environmental impacts associated with US gas pipelines and LNG projects planned for the Gulf of California. Legislators Gabriela Félix and Juan Pablo Arenívar presented an initiative urging relevant federal agencies to evaluate the 'Terminal GNL de Sonora/Saguaro Energía', 'American Mexican Integrated Gas Operations' (AMIGO), and 'Vista Pacífico LNG' projects.

They called for transparent studies that assess ecological, social, and economic impacts, involving independent scientists. Concerns were raised about greenhouse gas emissions, noise pollution, marine wildlife collisions, and potential contamination affecting protected areas and regional fisheries and tourism, especially given the Gulf's status as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
