South Africa Advances Hydrogen Mobility and PGM Utilization with New Facilities
South Africa is enhancing hydrogen mobility through new facilities at North West University, in partnership with Toyota South Africa and ARM. These initiatives align with the country's net-zero carbon goals and JET-IP investment plan, focusing on the development of hydrogen technologies using locally abundant platinum group metals.

The mobile hydrogen refuelling station and rapid prototyping facility at North West University (NWU) are now operational, supporting South Africa's hydrogen economy and JET-IP investment strategy. These initiatives aim to boost hydrogen mobility and decarbonize the transport sector, utilizing platinum group metals (PGMs) in hydrogen generation through PEM electrolysis.
The facilities promote collaboration between public and private sectors while advancing green hydrogen technologies. South Africa's HySA program aims to leverage its significant PGM reserves to develop low-carbon hydrogen solutions. Concurrently, international developments in hydrogen, such as partnerships in the US, Germany, and Austria, highlight the growing global focus on hydrogen as a sustainable energy source.
