South Africa Advances Platinum-Based Electrolyser Development for Hydrogen Technologies
The South African government aims to utilize the country's platinum group metal reserves to develop hydrogen technologies, particularly electrolysers, through the Hydrogen South Africa programme. The initiative includes pilot deployments in public-sector infrastructure and sets targets for 2030, such as the introduction of hydrogen-fuelled buses and refuelling stations. The Department of Science, Technology and Innovation has also supported pilot hydrogen fuel cell projects in various public facilities to demonstrate the technology's application.

The South African government is focusing on developing hydrogen technologies, particularly electrolysers, leveraging its platinum group metal (PGM) reserves, which account for approximately 75% of global reserves. This initiative is part of the Hydrogen South Africa programme aimed at scaling low-emission hydrogen production and integrating South Africa into the global hydrogen value chain.
The Hydrogen Society Roadmap includes targets for 2030, such as deploying 100 hydrogen-fuelled buses and trucks, 20 hydrogen-powered forklifts, and at least five hydrogen refuelling stations. The Department of Science, Technology and Innovation has supported pilot hydrogen fuel cell deployments in public infrastructure, including installations at disaster management centres and military hospitals, and has facilitated earlier projects converting vehicles to hydrogen fuel cell systems.
