South Africa and Netherlands Forge Scientific Partnership for Geoscience Advancement
A MoU between the Council for Geoscience and TNO aims to enhance geoscience capabilities in South Africa, with a focus on critical raw materials. The partnership, running from 2026 to 2028, seeks to create economic opportunities while promoting sustainable resource management.

On July 7, 2026, the Council for Geoscience (CGS) in South Africa signed a Memorandum of Understanding with TNO, the Geological Survey of the Netherlands. This MoU establishes the PanAfGeo+ Country Window South Africa project, aimed at improving national capabilities in geosciences related to critical raw materials and fostering collaboration with the EU.
Spanning from 2026 to 2028, the initiative will facilitate mineral exploration, mine development, and the establishment of local processing facilities. It positions South Africa as a leader in geoscience and resource governance, crucial for the global supply of critical minerals, especially for clean energy technologies. The strategic partnership could enhance job creation in Limpopo and contribute to decarbonisation efforts.
