South Africa Announces Demothballing of Pebble Bed Modular Reactor for Energy Security

South Africa's Energy and Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa announced the demothballing of the Pebble Bed Modular Reactor (PBMR) at the Pelindaba site in November 2024. This initiative underscores a renewed commitment to energy security and diversification, aiming to establish South Africa as a leader in small modular reactor (SMR) technology.
The original PBMR design will not be reactivated, as stated by nuclear physicist Dr. Kelvin Kemm, chairperson of Stratek Global.
