South Africa's DEE Seeks Stakeholder Input on Itac Tariff Proposals for Renewable Energy Components
The Department of Electricity and Energy (DEE) in South Africa is soliciting feedback on tariff proposals from the International Trade Administration Commission (Itac) that may impact the renewable energy sector. Stakeholders have until April 24 to provide comments, which will inform decisions regarding local manufacturing protections and investments.

The DEE has initiated a call for comments regarding Itac's proposals to raise tariffs and eliminate staged consignments for renewable energy components, including lithium batteries and solar panels. These proposals were introduced by Trade, Industry and Competition Minister Parks Tau on March 27.
SAREM aims to bolster local production, having identified over 4,000 components for which South Africa has manufacturing capabilities. The Local Content Compliance Unit has determined that staged consignments threaten existing jobs, notably in steel tower manufacturing, with over 300 positions at risk in Atlantis, Cape Town. Stakeholders are urged to respond by April 24, as the government seeks to create a stable environment for investment in local manufacturing.
