South Australia Faces Doubling Electricity Demand Amid Industrial Growth
South Australia’s peak electricity demand is projected to rise to over 6.5 GW within 15 years, driven by industrial expansion in mining, steelmaking, and AI. The state must enhance its transmission infrastructure to seize this economic opportunity and maintain energy reliability.

South Australia is set to see its peak electricity demand increase from 3.3 GW to more than 6.5 GW over the next 15 years. This growth is primarily driven by expansions in mining, steelmaking, and defense industries, as well as the integration of data centers.
Key transmission projects identified by ElectraNet include upgrades to the network between Port Augusta and Whyalla, the Eyre Peninsula Upgrade, and the Northern Transmission project. Timely investments in transmission infrastructure are critical to support the state's transition to a fully renewable energy grid by 2024, which currently sources approximately 75% of its electricity from wind and solar. Failure to enhance infrastructure may hinder economic growth and job creation across the region.
