South Coast AQMD Approves $30 Million for Zero-Emission School Buses and Charging Infrastructure
The South Coast AQMD has approved $30 million to assist communities affected by air pollution in replacing older school buses with zero-emission models and installing charging infrastructure. This funding aims to improve air quality by reducing pollutants like nitrogen oxides and particulate matter, particularly benefiting children who are more vulnerable to respiratory issues. Eligible applicants are operators of privately-owned school buses servicing public school districts in designated overburdened communities.

On February 6, 2026, the South Coast AQMD Governing Board approved $30 million for the AB 617 Clean Community School Initiative, aimed at replacing older school buses with zero-emission models and installing charging infrastructure. The initiative targets communities affected by air pollution, allowing operators of privately-owned buses servicing public school districts to apply.
Eligible existing buses must be diesel, natural gas, or propane-fueled, with specific weight and safety requirements. Replacement buses must be CARB-certified zero-emission vehicles. This initiative is expected to significantly reduce air pollution, benefiting children's health and fostering cleaner learning environments.
