South Korea Adopts Premium Strategy in Automotive and Shipbuilding to Compete with China
Amid increasing competition from China in key industries, South Korea is enhancing its automotive and shipbuilding sectors through a premium strategy. South Korean automakers are focusing on high-performance vehicles and a broader range of powertrains, evidenced by Hyundai's new electric models. The shipbuilding sector is also prioritizing advanced, eco-friendly vessels. Sales of premium brands like Genesis have surged, showcasing the effectiveness of this strategy.

In response to China's growing competitiveness, South Korea is implementing a premium strategy in the automotive and shipbuilding industries. South Korean automakers, facing price competition from Chinese electric vehicle subsidies, are enhancing product quality and brand positioning.
Hyundai's high-performance Ioniq 5 N and Ioniq 6 N illustrate this shift, with significant horsepower and advanced thermal management. Genesis sales have escalated from 6,948 vehicles in 2016 to 82,331 in 2022.
The shipbuilding sector is also focused on high-value vessels, securing global orders, including contracts for LNG carriers. Companies like HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering emphasize eco-friendly technologies to maintain competitiveness.
