South Korea to Enhance Naval Defense with SM-3 Missile Acquisition
South Korea plans to procure SM-3 missiles from the U.S. for approximately $506 million to upgrade its naval defense systems. This initiative aims to strengthen the capabilities of the AEGIS destroyer fleets amid rising regional tensions.

South Korea is set to acquire new SM-3 missiles through the Foreign Military Sales program, with an investment of around $506 million. This procurement will enhance the AEGIS destroyer fleets, crucial for maritime security, and is expected to involve the deployment of 20 to 30 missiles.
The initiative aligns with South Korea's goal to upgrade its air defense systems, particularly in the context of the KDX-III Batch II destroyers. These vessels include advanced weaponry such as 88 vertical launch system cells and various missile types.
The first destroyer of this class, ROKS Jeongjo the Great, was commissioned in 2024, with further units in the pipeline. This military enhancement reflects South Korea's strategic response to increasing regional tensions.
