South Korean Shipbuilders Target US Navy MRO Contracts Amid Market Concerns
South Korean shipbuilders are engaging in US Navy maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) contracts, driven by the MASGA project, with Hanwha Ocean winning three deals and HD Hyundai securing two. There are concerns about long-term market viability due to regulatory constraints and dock capacity issues.
The US Navy spends $6 billion to $7.4 billion annually on MRO services, with projections to rise to $8 billion-$12 billion by 2030. However, US federal law restricts foreign shipyards from repairing naval vessels, limiting the opportunities for Korean firms. As of 2024, most Navy vessels must be serviced at US shipyards, leaving a small market for Korean shipbuilders, who face challenges in generating consistent deal flow and securing long-term contracts.
