South Korea's Big Three Shipbuilders Project 1.92 Trillion Won Profit in Q1
The combined operating profit of South Korea's leading shipbuilders is forecasted at 1.92 trillion won for Q1 2026, a 55% increase from the previous year. This growth is driven by a strategic focus on high-value ship types, particularly LNG carriers, amid rising newbuilding prices.

The 'Big 3' shipbuilders in South Korea—HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, Hanwha Ocean, and Samsung Heavy Industries—are projected to achieve a combined revenue of 14.1 trillion won in Q1 2026, marking a 13.6% year-on-year increase. The shift towards high-value ship types, including LNG carriers, has led to an operating profit of 1.92 trillion won, reflecting a 54.9% rise.
HD Korea is estimated to generate 7.79 trillion won in revenue, while Samsung Heavy expects 3.01 trillion won, both showing substantial growth. The backlog of high-priced orders and an anticipated increase in newbuilding prices due to competition among shipowners will likely enhance the profitability of these firms further.
