South Korea's HD Hyundai Exports K2 Tank Engines, Ending Reliance on German Technology
South Korea's HD Hyundai Construction Equipment has initiated exports of the DV27K engine for the K2 main battle tank, marking a significant step toward defense industrial self-reliance and ending reliance on German engines. The DV27K, a 1,500-horsepower diesel engine, replaces the German MTU MB873 series, which required export approval from Berlin.
The development faced challenges, including power output stability and durability, but the DV27K now meets all requirements for armored vehicles. It enables the K2 tank to achieve speeds of up to 70 kilometers per hour and is certified for international use.
This shift allows South Korea to export the K2 without needing third-party approval for its core powertrain. Contracts have been secured for 116 engines for Poland's K2 tanks and sole supplier status for Turkey's Altay tank, with additional interest from South America and the Middle East.
