South Korea's KF-21 Fighter Completes 1,600 Test Flights, Development Set for Completion in 2026

DEFENSE

The Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) of South Korea announced the completion of flight testing for the KF-21 fighter jet, achieving approximately 1,600 sorties without incident. The program, initiated in 2015 to replace aging F-4 and F-5 aircraft, aims to finalize development in the first half of 2026 and deliver an initial operational batch in the second half.

The KF-21, developed by Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) alongside DAPA and involving over 600 subcontractors, is designed to enhance South Korea's air force capabilities. Although the project has progressed rapidly, challenges remain regarding dependencies on foreign technologies, particularly in engine development and export regulations.

The program's first production lot will be reduced from 40 to 20 aircraft temporarily to ensure quality and safety. A transition to multi-role capabilities is planned, with Block II expected to integrate ground attack capabilities starting in 2027.
