Space Force Aims to Accelerate Airborne Moving Target Indicator Development with $2 Billion Funding
The Space Force is set to accelerate the Airborne Moving Target Indicator (AMTI) program with $2 billion in fiscal 2026 funding. Chief of Space Operations Gen. Chance Saltzman announced positive results from experiments with space-based sensors for tracking airborne targets at the Air Force Association Warfare Conference.
The AMTI program, developed in cooperation with the National Reconnaissance Office, aims to replace aging aircraft like the E-7 Wedgetail and E-8 JSTARS. Space Force officials anticipate achieving both AMTI and Ground Moving Target Indicator (GMTI) capabilities by the early 2030s, essential for the Golden Dome initiative for a comprehensive air defense system.
