SpaceX and Tesla Announce $16.8 Billion Investment in Texas Semiconductor Facility
SpaceX and Tesla are set to invest $16.8 billion in the first phase of the Terafab semiconductor project in Texas, aiming to produce over 1 terawatt of computing capacity annually. This investment is crucial for addressing the anticipated chip demand for both companies’ AI and automotive technologies.

SpaceX and Tesla plan to invest $16.8 billion in Terafab, a semiconductor manufacturing facility in Grimes County, Texas, covering 100 million square feet. This initial phase is projected to create at least 3,000 jobs and aims to meet the companies' combined demand for AI chips, which is expected to exceed 1 terawatt of computing power annually.
The project, which has the potential total investment of $119 billion across subsequent phases, will consolidate various aspects of chip manufacturing and testing. Intel has partnered in this venture, contributing its expertise and technology.
The facility will use water from the nearby Gibbons Creek Reservoir for industrial purposes. Local concerns regarding environmental impact and tax incentives have emerged, highlighting the need for community engagement in major industrial projects.
