Spain Proposes Four Alfa 4000 Frigates for Sweden's Luleå-Class Competition
Navantia has submitted a €3 billion proposal to provide Sweden with four Alfa 4000 frigates by 2031 as part of the Luleå-class program. This bid underscores the strategic shift in Sweden's naval capabilities amidst NATO integration and evolving defense needs in the Baltic region.

Navantia proposes to deliver four Alfa 4000 frigates to Sweden by 2031, with an estimated total cost of €3 billion. These ships, designed for air defense, anti-submarine warfare, and surface engagements, will feature a 16-cell vertical launch system and are expected to displace approximately 4,300 tonnes.
The delivery schedule includes two vessels by 2030, with the remaining two to follow by 2031. Sweden's Luleå-class specifications necessitate ships longer than 120 meters, with operational capabilities aimed at enhancing maritime security amid NATO integration.
The proposal features integration of Swedish combat systems, allowing domestic participation in system outfitting and support. The absence of an operational reference for the Alfa 4000 introduces potential integration risks, contrasting with the more mature proposals from Naval Group and Saab/Babcock. Sweden's decision will weigh cost, industrial involvement, and technical maturity.
