Spanish Air Force Deploys EF-18 Hornets to Support NATO Baltic Air Policing from Lithuania
The Spanish Air Force has deployed 11 EF-18M fighter jets to Šiauliai Air Base in Lithuania for a four-month NATO Baltic Air Policing mission, involving a detachment of 200 personnel. The EF-18, known for its versatility and upgraded capabilities, will enhance air defense against potential threats from Russian military aircraft. This deployment precedes the transition to new Eurofighter jets, as Spain phases out its F-35 Lightning II fleet.

The Spanish Air Force's 15th Wing has deployed 11 EF-18M fighter jets to Šiauliai Air Base, Lithuania, for a four-month NATO Baltic Air Policing mission. The EF-18, a variant of the US-made F/A-18 Hornet, is utilized for intercepting unidentified aircraft and drones.
Pilots praise its user-friendly cockpit and ability to operate at both high and low speeds, making it effective for diverse air patrol tasks. The Spanish detachment, comprising 200 members, is prepared for rapid scrambles in response to potential threats from Russian military aircraft.
Spain's EF-18 fleet has been upgraded over the years and carries various air-to-air weapons. The 15th Wing will be succeeded by Romania and France in March 2026. Meanwhile, Spain is transitioning to new Eurofighter jets, moving away from the F-35 Lightning II.
