Spanish Army Begins Operational Trials of 40 VCR Dragón 8x8 Armored Vehicles
The Spanish Army has commenced operational trials of 40 VCR Dragón 8x8 armored vehicles, part of a program initiated in 2007 to replace older models with a total of 1,200 planned. Following delays, the program was revitalized in 2013, culminating in a €1.74 billion contract signed in 2020 for the first phase, which includes advanced features such as a 30 mm cannon and Spike missile compatibility. The vehicles, weighing approximately 33 tonnes and capable of speeds up to 100 km/h, are built by a consortium led by Indra.

The Spanish Army has received 40 VCR Dragón 8x8 armored vehicles, with deliveries including vehicles stationed in Almería and others at various operational sites. The VCR Dragón program, initiated in 2007 to replace older models, aims for 348 vehicles in its first phase, with a total of 1,200 planned.
The program faced delays but was reactivated in 2013, leading to a €1.74 billion contract signed in 2020 for the first phase. Financial projections estimate a total acquisition cost of €2.5 billion, with unit costs ranging from €4.59 million to €7 million.
The Dragón features a mix of national and foreign components, including a 30 mm cannon, Spike missile compatibility, and advanced electronic systems, and is built by a consortium led by Indra. The vehicle weighs approximately 33 tonnes, can reach speeds of 100 km/h, and is designed for various tactical roles.
