Sri Lanka Begins Construction on 150 MW Solar Park in Hambantota
The largest solar power park in Sri Lanka has commenced construction in Hambantota, spanning 450 acres with a capacity of 150 MW. The US$150 million project is expected to begin contributing to the national grid by year-end 2025, with full operations by 2026. It aims to tackle power shortages in the Southern Province, providing 20% of the country's daytime electricity demand and creating 750 to 1,000 jobs. The park will also feature innovative agricultural practices using shaded solar panel installations.

Construction has started on Sri Lanka's largest solar power park in Hambantota, covering 450 acres and designed to generate 150 MW of electricity. The US$150 million project, led by the private sector, will contribute to the national grid by the end of 2025, with full capacity by 2026.
It aims to address power cuts in the Southern Province, contributing 20% to daytime electricity demand. The investment is privately funded, with two firms contributing 70 MW and 80 MW. Unique features include elevated solar panels for crop cultivation and a US$16 million investor-financed transmission infrastructure. The project will create 750 to 1,000 jobs and incorporates environmental management measures to protect local wildlife.
