Sri Lanka to Construct Shelters for Cyclone Ditwah Displaced Residents
Sri Lanka plans to build interim shelters for approximately 1,000 individuals affected by Cyclone Ditwah, focusing on districts including Kegalle and Kandy. Construction is set to begin in early May 2026, as part of the government's 'Rebuilding Sri Lanka' initiative.

The Sri Lanka Army will oversee the construction of temporary shelters for about 1,000 displaced individuals in regions impacted by Cyclone Ditwah. A meeting led by Deputy Minister of Defence Major General (Retd) Aruna Jayasekara emphasized the need for a detailed implementation plan and adherence to safety standards for the selected land.
Authorities aim to expedite the project, with construction commencing in the first week of May 2026 and completion expected shortly thereafter. Coordination with various stakeholders, including the National Building Research Institute (NBRI) and local District Secretaries, is crucial to ensure transparency and avoid delays. This initiative is part of the broader 'Rebuilding Sri Lanka' program.
