The Sri Lankan Navy is surveying and acquiring privately owned Tamil lands in Eluvaitivu Island, with activities scheduled for the 20th and 21st of this month. Residents have expressed concern over the appropriation of a two-acre plot and a 53-perch parcel for military use.
Similar attempts were made nearly three years ago but halted due to local opposition. Landowners question the government's commitment to its slogan, 'The people's land belongs to the people,' amidst renewed efforts to take over ancestral lands. The timing follows President Anura Kumara Dissanayake's recent visit to Jaffna, raising local anxieties over the military's ongoing presence in the region.
